Many of you have been wondering how Ten for Him™ got started…
I was in a Dollar Store with my youngest son, Cole. In the store, I noticed a middle aged man in a flannel work shirt with his special needs teenage son. They were carefully picking out items. The man seemed to have infinite patience and tenderness toward his son. At the checkout counter there was a problem…in a very dignified and gracious way, this man was having a disagreement with the cashier. She said he had given her $10 and he said he had given her $20. The change had already been made. The cashier drawer was closed. They were at a standstill. I was next in a line of many. People were starting to sigh in frustration.
It was a Dollar Store downer moment. I reached into my cluttered purse and pulled out $10. Awkwardly, I gave it to the man. He looked at me with a squint as if trying to figure me out. I mumbled something about having some extra money, blushed and stuttered. He thanked me, still looking at me strangely, but with happy eyes. His son smiled at me. They left. The cashier said that that was a nice thing to do and I blushed some more.
As my son and I left soon after, Cole said, “I KNEW you were going to do that!” That made me feel really happy…and then I thought, “WHY didn’t I mention God to the man and his son or say SOMETHING about Jesus or be LESS WEIRD about the whole thing?” I also thought, “I need to plan on doing that more, so my sons see giving as a joy and exciting part of the Christian life.” I had gotten a buzz out of giving and wanted to give more, to be ready when the opportunity presented itself and to share this idea with friends. It was a fleeting thought, and then I was absorbed into daily life and forgot about it until…
The next day, I was out on a walk and God “downloaded” Ten~4~Him into my brain. I got excited about it and called my childhood friend, Carmen Duncan. A few days later she called me back and said, “I’ve got my ten friends, how are we going to do this?” Uh, we were actually going to DO this. Carmen set the wheels in motion. We came up with the Ten~4~Him format. Her group is in Lovington, New Mexico and my group is in Coppell, Texas. The common denominator within the group members is that we love Jesus and love to give.
IT REALLY IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE. We would love for you to join us. Please read the attached protocol and see if you would like to form a group. The format is simple, but the impact is life changing. Our goal is to have 1,000 groups giving $1,000,000.00 out every year in the name of Jesus. Please report back to us, so we can know how many groups are operating in the United States, and hopefully, one day, around the world. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN!
